Privacy Policy
Effective date: 14 May 2026 - Last updated: 14 May 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Birdie Ltda. ("we", "us", "Birdie")
handles your information when you use the Read My Document add-in for
Microsoft Word and related backend services (collectively, the "Service"). We aim to
collect the minimum data needed to operate the Service and to be transparent about it.
1. Information we collect
The Service collects the following categories of data:
-
Document text you choose to read aloud. When you click "Read
document" or "Read selected text", the corresponding text is sent from the add-in
to our backend so that it can be synthesised into speech. We do not analyse, share,
train models on, or persist your document text. It is held in volatile memory only
for the duration needed to produce and stream the audio, and is discarded when the
service process restarts.
-
Synthesised audio. The audio we generate is returned to your
browser and not stored on our side.
-
Identity (only if you sign in). If you choose to sign in with your
Microsoft 365 account to access paid plans, we receive and store the Microsoft
Entra Object ID, Tenant ID, email address, and display name from the access token
issued by Microsoft. We do not request or store passwords.
-
Subscription metadata. When you purchase a paid plan through the
Microsoft Commercial Marketplace, we receive and store the Marketplace subscription
identifier, the plan you selected, quantity, and lifecycle events (active,
cancelled, suspended).
-
Usage telemetry. We collect aggregate telemetry to operate the
Service: which voice was selected, the size of the text in characters, the language
detected, processing latency, and error rates. We do not collect the text
itself in telemetry.
2. How we use the data
- Provide the text-to-speech functionality you requested.
- Authenticate your subscription and enforce plan limits.
- Detect bugs, performance regressions, and abuse.
- Communicate billing and service notices.
We do not sell or rent personal data. We do not use your document content for
advertising, profiling, or training third-party AI models.
3. Sub-processors
The Service relies on the following sub-processors, each of which receives only the
data needed to perform its function:
-
Microsoft Corporation - Azure App Service hosting, Azure SQL
Database, Microsoft Entra (identity), Application Insights (telemetry), Microsoft
Commercial Marketplace (billing).
-
Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services - Speech. When you select a
Premium (Neural) voice, the relevant text is sent to Azure Cognitive Services in
the West US region for synthesis, then discarded by Azure.
-
ElevenLabs, OpenAI, Google Cloud. When you select a Studio-tier
voice on the Pro+ plan, text is sent to the corresponding provider for synthesis
only.
We do not share data with any third party beyond what is technically necessary to
operate the Service.
4. Data retention
- Document text: not persisted; in-memory only.
- Telemetry events: 90 days in Application Insights.
- Account and subscription records: retained while your account is active, plus 18 months for billing and audit purposes after cancellation, then deleted.
5. Your rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any
time by writing to support@birdie.cl. We will
respond within 30 days. If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United
Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA; the
same email address is the way to exercise them.
6. Cookies and tracking
The Read My Document task pane does not use advertising or cross-site tracking
cookies. It uses your browser's localStorage to remember your selected
voice, speed, and pitch between sessions. Application Insights places a first-party
cookie to correlate telemetry events from the same session; this cookie carries no
personally identifiable information.
7. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from
children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please
contact us and we will remove it.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last
updated" date at the top. Material changes that affect how we process your data will
be announced via the add-in interface and, if applicable, by email to subscribers.
